1. This quote is explored in the novel because throughout the whole book you will notice character that are different from the average person. They do something or notice things that a normal person cannot. There are many dreamers in the book. Those who have certain interest in things or know something that the next person may not. In the book, Baily could be considered a dreamer because he takes special interest in the circus throughout the book. Ever since he was a child and he first visited the circus he loved it. Every one else would see performers doing tricks and stunts but he noticed the magic in it. He saw things that should not have been possible and it filled him with wonder.
Ceilia and Marco would be two other dreamers in the novel. They know the difference between illusions and true magic. They were trained from a young age to know such things. Now that they are older they know how to make their actual magic just seem like illusions to those who do not know of true magic. When Ceilia auditioned to be the magician in Chandresh's circus, he believed her magic was just a very good illusion. Marco knew it was true magic because he was trained to do the same thing.
2. The changing perspectives in the novel help with the reading. It gives you insight on the story and history of the circus. How the circus started and how it lives on. It also helps you keep up with the true plot of the story. The story is about how Ceilia and Marco meet and how the competion plays out. The circus is what ties them together. Including the history of the circus and other perspectives of expirences in the circus helps tell Marco and Ceilia's story as well.
I think the author chose to use different point of view in the story to add depth to her actual reason for writing the story. It would be easy to just start off with the competition of two magician who fall in love. Instead she went deeper into the story. She showed their lives before they knew their magic. Showing the struggles they went through to learn everything and their lives before they ever met eachother. She also shows what happened and what was planned long before the circus was even what is was today.
3. I think the fact that the performers have no idea what is going on is definately not okay. I think they have a right to know what they are being involved in. It is their life and now they have no idea what is being done with it. Unfortunately, them not knowing has to be done. I think in order for the game to be played out right they had to be put in the dark about it. From the beginning the competition was a private game so it is only best that nobody knows.
If something were to go wrong then, yes Ceilia and Marco owe some explanations. I think if they knew what was going on earlier then maybe they would have told. At first, they did not even know other were involved. If they did then maybe they would not have tried to quit the competition. They were in love so they did not really know that anyone would be harmed. They really did not even know anything about the competion because they were put in when they were young. If everything could have gone smoothly without anyone getting hurt then maybe that could have happened.
4. Isobel and Ceilia are slightly different from each other. Isobel is more open about what she does. When she first met Marco she told him she told him she knew what everything in his book was. Then, she told him that she could read the deck of cards that fortune teller use. That was already a sign that she knew things about the magical world. Ceilia is more quiet about things. At first, not many people knew that Prospero even had a daughter. Then, when she comes to the audition they did not even know about her. No one would have ever suspected that she was a magician too.
I think that Chandresh is a character foil to Marco. Just because of the way he acts makes him the opposite of Marco. Chandresh is confident in the things he does. He speaks his opinion often. He is very social and throws house parties and invites his wealthy friends. He must be wealthy because he has the idea to start a circus. Marco keeps more to himself. He is Chandresh's assistant so is most likely the opposite to him. He observes everybody and is quiet most of time. He writes in his book most of the time and stays in his home when he is not working. The first time he saw Ceilia he did not really say anything, he just kind of admired her quietly.
Comments on Malissa Torres' Blog:
1. I basically thought the same thing about the first part.
I never really thought of punishments, that is a creative way of thinking.
2.The book really does change views a lot.
I got really confused at first too. But then it got really easy to understand.
3.You should keep reading until you get to this part.
This is the part of the book when things get a little more exiting.
4. When you get to certain points in the book you will understand this question.
You will notice the character foils as you go on.
